Rotary Club leads three-pronged effort as new health trail nears completion

The Evanston Rotary Club, along with the BEAR Project Board and Evanston Parks and Recreation District are nearing completion of the Rotary Health Trail Fitness Course.

The course runs along the Bear River Greenway and begins on the main trail, nearest the greenway entrance. The fitness course is located between the Greenway Entry and Debbie’s Bridge, located at the greenway entrance across from Hamblin Park.

Fourteen exercise stations offer a variety of exercises designed to build strength and flexibility while walking for your health. The course offers a self-guided fitness regime suitable for all ages and abilities.

The cooperative effort among the Rotary Club, the BEAR Project Board and Evanston Parks and Recreation District is funded by of contributions and fundraising efforts from all three entities. The Evanston Rotary Club donated $20,000 toward the project, made possible by local fundraising events such as the annual Rotary Bear-ly Spring Golf Tournament, the Rotary Chuck Wagon Dinner, and the Rotary Labor Day Pancake Breakfast.

The club also received a $5,000 grant from Rotary International District 5440. Rotary Club members also worked to help complete the project, donating their time and skills to complete the final stations of the course.

In addition, The BEAR Project Board contributed $5,000 toward the purchase of the fitness equipment. Evanston Parks and Recreation District contributed supplies, materials and labor, with an estimated value of $5,000.

A grand opening of the Health Trail Fitness Course will be held in September.
