EVANSTON — There’s not much worse than seeing the precious life of a young person slip away. But that’s exactly what Evanston resident Amy Ellis had to do recently when she lost her nephew, Hunter, to leukemia, a type of cancer of the blood or bone marrow with an exceptionally high mortality rate.

“He had leukemia for 18 months,” Ellis told the Herald of her nephew, who was a former Evanston resident himself, along with his family. “Hunter was diagnosed almost two years ago. He went through a lot of radiation and chemotherapy, and a bone marrow transplant.”

But the tragedy of Hunter’s plight didn’t end with his terminal illness.

“While he was recovering from his bone marrow transplant, his mom passed away while she was with him,” Ellis said. “And then, 10 days after she passed away, they went in and got a bone marrow test, which Hunter failed. So, he was terminal.”
