EVANSTON — An Evanston High School senior is hoping to enlist the help of the local community to provide help to a rural school in Costa Rica she recently visited. Student Chelsey Velasquez has made the effort the centerpiece of her senior project.

“Traveling to Costa Rica, with the EF Educational Tour Company in the summer of 2012, I found my inspiration for my senior project,” Velasquez told the Herald. “In the dense rain forest of Monteverde, we visited a one-room school with one professor and minimal supplies. Students walk for many miles to receive an education, with grade levels ranging from elementary school to junior high.”

Velasquez said that, as soon as she returned home, she contacted the school district to see how they might help the little school. She said district technology supervisor Jaraun Dennis donated several computers to the effort, equipment that would otherwise have been recycled. And the tour company she traveled with originally has donated a $1,000 scholarship toward any worldwide trip through their company, or two domestic airline tickets, which will be raffled off to help generate funds to get the equipment to Costa Rica.

Velasquez said raffled tickets for the prizes are $5 each, or three for $10. Tickets will be sold through Feb. 25, with the drawing the next day.

For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Velasquez at (307) 679-8364.
