The Evanston girls basketball team needed to beat Green River last Thursday night in the opening round of Regionals to advance to the state tournament.
The Lady Devils prevailed with a 50-32 victory to punch their ticket to the state tournament. All that was left to be decided was which seed they would get this upcoming weekend in Casper.
“We won by 18 (against Green River, but we didn’t play particularly well in the third quarter. But, we got through the game and that was our goal,” coach Dave Deru said. “It’s a tough game. It was a tough situation. Even though we were the better team, we had a chance to lose and not make the state tournament. We came out and played really, really great defense.”
The Lady Devils held Green River to 11 first half points.
“In the third quarter, we slacked off a little bit. They got close, but then we took care of business,” Deru said. “I told them, ‘Don’t be disappointed because that was a hard game. (Friday) it’s going to happen.’”
