To find new beginning as bar, restaurant along Bear River

Renovation at the Old Mill has begun and the new owners say they want a new, fresh start for the historical building that will begin a new era as a restaurant and bar in Evanston.

Bruce and Billie Carter and their daughter, Aundee Steinke, said they opened The Scoop on Main Street with the vision of a snack bar where kids and their families could hang out.

“Our food has sort of taken over. Our goal is to simplify the Scoop to serve pretzels, sweets, hot dogs and those sorts of items,” Steinke said.

Steinke said the food they serve at the Scoop was well received; however, they didn’t have the proper ventilation that they needed. She said they do a lot of catering and they didn’t have the facility for it.

“That was one of our main goals in purchasing the Old Mill. We wanted to have a bigger kitchen facility,” Steinke said.

“Our volume of food is so large here at the Scoop that it is hard to keep up because of the size of the kitchen,” Steinke added.

Steinke said most of the hot food they serve at the Scoop will go to the Old Mill. She said the name of the bar side of the business will be “The Painted Lady Saloon.”
