The Evanston High School golf teams opened the 2023 fall season in fine fashion last week, sweeping the team titles at the Star Valley Invitational in Afton, held at the Valli Vu Golf Course.

In all, eight Red Devils and Lady Devils finished in the Top 10, led by Ryker Lind, who won medalist honors for the boys. Allison Sanchez-Mackey was the Lady Devils’ top finisher, placing second.

For the boys, Evanston won the team title with a 589, followed by host Star Valley Red in second (622) and Jackson in third (644). Pinedale was tied for fourth with Rock Springs in the nine-team field with a score of 633, while Star Valley Gold rounded out the Top 5 with a 715.

Lind opened the tournament on the Valli Vu course with a 70, then shaved six strokes on Day 2 to fire a 64, securing the title with a two-day total of 134. Teammate Sam Dolezal had the lowest round of the day on Day 1 with a 68, but was unable to duplicate that success on Day 2, carding a 78; his two-day total of 147 placed him in third, one stroke behind Rock Springs’ AJ Fletcher for runner-up.

Caden Hiatt (T-8th, 76-80-156), Porter Hall (T-10th, 75-85-160) and Luke Robinette (T-11th, 82-80-162) rounded out Evanston’s varsity contingent.

For the girls, the Lady Devils won the team title with a 541, followed by Jackson in second (560) and Green River in third (564). Star Valley Red was fourth (595), and Star Valley Gold rounded out the field in fifth (752).

Sanchez-Mackey carded an opening-round 84, then followed it with an 85 on Day 2, for a two-day total of 169, good enough for second place, behind medalist Isabell Salas, from Green River, who finished with a 69-70-139.

“The tournament went actually really well for me individually,” Sanchez-Mackey said. “I shot in the 80s both days. Coach Carroll asked us to come back in the fall shooting in the 80s, so I was super proud of myself.”

Maddi Brown, Kalli Fackrell and Marlee Torres also cracked the Top 10 — Brown was fourth (91-87-178), while Fackrell (102-93-195) and Torres (101-96-197) were ninth and 10th, respectively.

Hailee Ridenour — who earned All-State honors last season — only played the second day of the tournament, but carded a 93.

“The girls’ team played amazing,” Sanchez-Mackey said. “Our first day was tougher than the second, and we came back with a win. I am super-proud of our girls and boys’ teams, and I am so excited for the fall season.”
