Community raises awareness about child abuse, sexual assault

April was Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, as well as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. April 21-27 was National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. In recognition of those designations, several local law enforcement and social work agencies gathered at Evanston City Hall on Thursday, April 18, to witness Mayor Kent Williams’ signing of three proclamations and to plant pinwheels in the flower bed. “I appreciate what you guys are doing, thank you,” Williams said, acknowledging the organizations that work tirelessly to protect children in the community. Bear River Mayor Vernon Condie said, “This kind of thing, domestic violence, is one of the most dangerous things that law enforcement responds to.” Evanston Police Department Victim Witness Coordinator Vanessa Weekly declared, “It really takes a village to work together.” “And we are so lucky for that,” added SAFV Task Force Director Jesse Barnes.
