Piece of history added to library’s local history collection
The George family of Evanston donated their antique family ible to the Uinta County Library on Friday.
“This Bible will become the centerpiece of our local history collection,” said Dale Collum, Executive Director of the Uinta County Library, as he accepted its donation from the George family of Evanston.
The antique Bible was purchased in 1876 by David and Caroline Gingell, who became the first couple to be married in Evanston.
David Gingell’s mother also owned the first house in Evanston.
The Gingells had four children, none of whom survived, so the Bible was given to Caroline’s younger sister, the great-grandmother of cousins Bob and Edie George, who represented the George family in their wish to donate the Bible to the library.
“Our family was here early, and now Evanston is in its 140th year. We felt that this was a valuable part of Evanston’s history,” explained Edie.
Bob added that, “Most of our family was born here, and some still live here. The Bible started in Evanston, and now it is back here. The first house is gone, those people are gone, but the Bible is still here.”
The unique leather-bound Bible contains the notes about the births, deaths, marriages, and other important events of the family, as was common at that time.
Library patrons will be able to view the Bible in the Wyoming Room, where a display case will be built.
